Deputies investigating fatal hit-and-run in White Center

The community is mourning the loss of Thomas Joseph Garnett, a Seattle man who was killed in a hit-and-run collision.

SEATTLE — The community is mourning the loss of Thomas Joseph Garnett, a Seattle man who was killed in a hit-and-run collision last week. Investigators say the driver who hit him hasn't been caught.

The King County Sheriff’s Office says the suspected vehicle is described as a silver 2007-2016 Jeep Compass with front-end damage to the grill and hood. The fatal collision happened in White Center, south of Roxbury Street and 15th Avenue Southwest, on April 22, just after 10 p.m.

People who live and work in the area say it highlights ongoing traffic safety concerns.

Inside Vicky Salon, the barbers say they see it firsthand.

“We have people just driving really fast, and people just cross the street without even looking, so it happens a lot,” said Carlos Santos.

“This is a very dangerous corner,” said Dean Taylor, who lives nearby. “I have been seeing so many deaths around here in White Center. It is pitiful."

In King County alone, there were 152 fatalities on the road in 2022 and 172 last year, according to WSDOT crash data.

The King County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information about the hit-and-run collision to call 1-800-222-TIPS or visit www.P3Tips.com
