3 babies overdose on fentanyl in Everett in four days

Between April 20-24, Everett fire crews and police responded to three separate incidents of babies ingesting fentanyl.

EVERETT, Wash. — Three babies overdosed on fentanyl in Everett between April 20-24, resulting in the death of one and hospitalization of two others.

The fentanyl in these situations were left unsecured in homes, according to the Everett Fire Department.

April 20

On April 20, around 7:45 p.m., firefighters were called to a home on East Marine View Drive in the Delta Neighborhood after an 11-month-old was found unresponsive by their parents. The baby was given the overdose drug Narcan before firefighters arrived. Firefighters provided air and the baby was taken to the hospital.

The baby in that incident is in stable condition and has since been released from the hospital.

April 24

The second overdose was reported at 11:45 a.m. on April 24 in an apartment on Broadway in the Port Gardner neighborhood. A six-month-old was having trouble breathing.

Firefighters arrived to find the baby unresponsive and began medical aid, including providing Narcan.

The baby is at Children's Hospital in stable condition.

A third overdose was reported around 1:30 p.m. the same day.

The call was for a 13-month-old who wasn't breathing. Firefighters arrived and began providing aid.

The baby was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center where they later died.

Cases under investigation

Specific information on each case has not been released because police are still investigating. Police do not believe the cases are connected.

"The City of Everett is deeply concerned about the increasing fentanyl overdoses that involve young children," a statement from the city reads. "Even a small amount of fentanyl residue can be lethal to children, as the drug can be more potent to a baby or toddler's smaller body and lack of opioid tolerance. Pills can look like candy to children, especially when they're brightly colored."
