New parks in Rainier Valley, South Park need names. Here's how you can make a suggestion

Name suggestions for the parks are due by May 31.

SEATTLE — Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is inviting the public to submit potential names for parks in the Rainier Valley and South Park neighborhoods.

SPR said name suggestions for the parks are due to the Park Naming Committee by May 31. The agency said it needs an explanation of how your suggestion matches the naming criteria, which includes geographical location, historical or cultural significance, and natural or geological features.

Park officials are nearing the completion of its new park at South Charleston Street between 34th and 35th Avenue South in the North Rainier community. The park's working name is the North Rainier Landbank Site. You can make a suggestion for the park's name here.

The second park is a 0.83-acre site located along the South Park River Walk. The park's design includes an open lawn, primary event space, play elements, seating terraces, accessible pathways, bio-swales, irrigation and landscape improvements, according to SPR. This park's working name is the South Park Plaza Site. You can make a suggestion for the park's name here.

Suggestions can also be sent via email to paula.hoff@seattle.gov, or by mailing to Seattle Parks and Recreation, Parks Naming Committee, 100 Dexter Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98109.

Last month SPR announced the city will be adding two new dog parks at West Seattle Stadium and Othello Park. Seattle parks said the planning and construction timeline would be announced soon.

The site studied at West Seattle Stadium is about 16,000 square feet. It sits to the west of the golf course and south of the stadium. The Othello Park site is about 12,000 square feet and is located on the southwest corner near South Webster Street and 43rd Avenue South.
