Thurston County deputies chase suspect down highways, walking trail near Olympia

The man gave deputies a fake name during a traffic stop and then fled. He was arrested on charges including DUI, attempting to elude police and more.

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — A pursuit in Thurston County ended in the arrest of a convicted criminal on Wednesday morning.

According to court documents, deputies with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office pulled a driver over at around 8 a.m. for traffic infractions, including a broken tail light and a tinted license plate cover.

During the traffic stop on 80th Avenue Southeast in Lacey, the driver said he didn't have his license on him and gave deputies a fake name. The suspect told the deputy to "write him a ticket or let him go." When he was told that was no longer an option, he started to turn on his ignition.

He then reportedly fled the scene.

Deputies tried to deploy spike strips when he sped away but were unsuccessful.

Multiple patrol cars then pursued the suspect in his black Nissan pickup. During the pursuit, speeds reached up to 70 mph, according to court documents.

TCSO deputies chased him down highways, side streets and even onto the populated Chehalis Western Trail. Dashcam footage showed pedestrians moving off the trail while the pursuit took place.

He was also captured on dashcam footage going the wrong way through roundabouts, driving erratically through a construction zone, and driving into oncoming traffic.

Deputies attempted a PIT maneuver on 26th Avenue Northeast, but the suspect was able to get away. Minutes later, while driving in reverse, he crashed into a camping trailer parked in a residential driveway. That was when deputies were able to detain him.

For the incident, the suspect faces charges of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, first-degree criminal impersonation, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license in the third degree and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

He had an active warrant at the time of the traffic stop for assault with a deadly weapon.
