WASHINGTON — Facebook users have reported hearing a new sound recently coming from their cellphones while scrolling on the app.

The chirping sound isn't particularly loud, but it's clear from the number of online posts that not everyone likes to hear the sound relentlessly while scrolling.

Meta communications director Andy Stone said Tuesday morning they're working to fix the "technical error."

"Hearing a chirping noise while scrolling through your Facebook Feed on your iPhone? It’s not you, it’s us! And it’s an unfortunate technical error that we're in the process of fixing," Stone posted

The issue doesn't appear to be impacting Android users.

If you want the chirping to go away in the meantime, Facebook's help center has step-by-step instructions on how to turn it (and other in-app sounds) off.

How to stop Facebook from chirping

1. Tap the three horizontal lines in the bottom right of Facebook (above 'Menu')

2. Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings

3. Scroll down to the Preferences section, then tap Media

4. Tap the toggle button next to In-App Sound to turn it off (It should go from blue to gray once you've turned it off)

Users will still be able to hear sound from videos if you turn In-App Sound off.

Unfortunately, some users on Reddit reported the In-App Sound resetting itself back on after a day or so.

If the instructions above don't fix the issue, another solution - at least temporarily - is to turn your cellphone on silent mode.

It's unclear exactly when the chirping sounds were added, but the latest iPhone app update was on Feb. 8 and social media posts about the chirping started popping up around Feb. 9
