Port Orchard playground equipment burned as vandalism, arson investigated

The South Kitsap School District says this is the second time playground equipment was damaged at the campus.

PORT ORCHARD, Wash — A South Kitsap elementary school is "saddened" and "frustrated" after a play structure was destroyed over the weekend.

The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office is investigating arson and vandalism after playground equipment was severely damaged at Burley Glenwood Elementary School on Jan. 20.

The South Kitsap School District (SKSD) says this is the second time on this campus in Port Orchard that playground equipment was damaged. A slide was destroyed in a fire on Christmas Eve and had to be removed.

Facilities grounds crews with SKSD removed the charred remnants of the structure and cleaned up the area, the district said in a Facebook post.

"It's a tough question because they ask, 'Why would someone want to do that?' and that's next to an impossible question to answer for them. But some people do not nice things and that's very unfortunate," said Principal Joey Kolattukudy.

Investigators are not saying at this point if the two fires are connected.

Anyone with information or tips about the investigation is asked to contact the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.
