Missing baby found dead in Port Townsend, man in custody

The baby, who was less than one month old, was found at Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park on Saturday morning.

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — A Port Townsend man is in custody and authorities are investigating after a missing baby was found dead Saturday.

The infant, less than one month old, was discovered deceased at Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park just before noon. The cause of the death is under investigation.

The investigation began on Friday afternoon when Port Townsend police were searching for a missing and endangered infant suspected to be with a 37-year-old man, who is believed to be the father.

According to the Port Townsend Police Department, the man was last seen In the area of Kah Tai Lagoon Nature Park. Police said they believed the infant was in danger because the man was "unable to provide the basic necessities of life" and was evading law enforcement. Police were investigating the man for kidnapping, criminal mistreatment, and reckless endangerment.

Police apprehended the man at around 10 a.m. Saturday, but the infant was not with him. Police said the man was initially uncooperative, but eventually led them to the infant's location.

The man remains in custody. KING 5 does not typically name suspects until they are charged in court.
