QUILCENE, Wash. — The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.0 earthquake in Jefferson County Sunday morning.
The earthquake happened around 7:14 a.m. about 3.8 miles west of Quilcene, according to the USGS.
The USGS said the magnitude 4.0 earthquake happened at a depth of 32 miles.
KING 5 viewers from areas such as Edmonds, Vashon Island to La Conner, have been sending messages saying they felt a shake.
According to the USGS, shaking was weak in Seattle and not felt in Tacoma or Port Angeles.
Earthquakes Canada reported a tsunami is not expected.
The earthquake happened just north of the Seattle Fault line. According to a study released in 2022, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on the Seattle Fault could trigger a tsunami that would only take minutes to reach the greater Seattle area.
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources released the study and urged Seattleites to be prepared, even though the last known earthquake on the Seattle Fault occurred about 1,100 years ago.
There are two ways to receive early warning alerts through the ShakeAlert system via the Wireless Emergency Alert system and your phone’s built-in software.
While most phones already have “Emergency Alerts” or “Public Safety” alerts already turned on, the state EMD asked the public to check their mobile phone to see if Wireless Emergency Alerts are turned on.
While the system is designed to give residents time to take cover in the event of an earthquake, it cannot predict when an earthquake will strike.
