Mukilteo school to move to remote learning until after winter break due to fire damage

Endeavour Elementary School suffered significant damage in an overnight fire.

MUKILTEO, Wash. — A Mukilteo elementary school damaged by a fire Monday morning is shifting to remote learning until the start of winter break on Dec. 18, according to a statement from the school district.

Classes will resume remotely on Dec. 7 at the earliest.

District officials are "hopeful" Endeavour Elementary School will reopen Jan. 2.

"It will take significant time to clean and repair the school to have it safe and ready for students to return," said a statement on the district's website.

District officials assessed alternative plans, including moving classrooms to other schools. Because of logistical challenges, classes will be held remotely until winter break.

The fire began in the attic of one of the Endeavour Elementary School buildings, according to the Mukilteo Fire Department. According to information posted on the school's Facebook page, the fire was above the library and office.

The fire alarm at Endeavour Elementary School began going off around 1:30 a.m. Monday, a fire department official told KING 5.

Several holes needed to be cut in the roof of the building to mitigate the fire, according to the fire department.

The district said the fire doesn't appear to have damaged any classrooms or the library. However, there is smoke and water damage "throughout much of the school."

The fire department doesn't believe the fire is suspicious but will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause.

Meanwhile, the district is working with the YMCA to provide childcare supervision at their Mukilteo location. The district is also trying to provide a long-term location to for families to pick up student meals.
