TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma crews battled a rail car fire Wednesday night that sent flames dozens of feet into the air.
The fire was reported at 8:34 p.m. when a rail car carrying automobiles caught fire at Marshall Avenue and Milwaukee Way near the Port of Tacoma. Flames were initially reported as 10 feet tall and growing upwards of 30 to 40 feet, according to the Tacoma Police Department.
Tacoma Fire Department crews responded and contained the fire.
Police said nothing had been relayed to the department that the fumes would cause a danger to the surrounding community.
The port said it would assess damage when the area is accessible.
Four Tacoma police cars were dispatched to help control traffic.
