OLYMPIA, Wash. — Northbound Interstate 5 reopened in Olympia Tuesday morning after a crash involving a semi-truck forced an hours-long closure.
The accident happened at around 10:40 p.m. Monday night at mile marker 103 near Custer Way.
The truck was traveling northbound in the first lane when it struck a barrier on the left side of the roadway and rolled over, according to a Washington State Patrol (WSP) memo. The cause is believed to be speed that was too fast for the conditions, WSP said.
The 62-year-old truck driver was not injured.
The truck blocked all the northbound lanes. The southbound lanes were blocked due to debris.
Both northbound and southbound I-5 were closed for nearly nine hours overnight while the Department of Ecology investigated whether the semi-truck involved had spilled corrosive materials on the roadway.
At around 4:40 a.m. Trooper John Dattilo said the accident was no longer a HAZMAT situation, and that I-5 north would be reopened as soon as the semi-truck was removed from the roadway. The interstate reopened at around 8 a.m.
Southbound I-5 reopened between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m.
