Armed carjacking suspects lead police on pursuit that ends in deadly crash

The driver of the suspect vehicle has died as a result of the crash. Two passengers from the vehicle are injured.

KING COUNTY, Wash. — One suspect is dead and two other suspects are in the hospital on Tuesday after allegedly carjacking someone at gunpoint in Maple Valley before leading officers on a pursuit that ended with the deadly crash, according to the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO).

Around 11:30 p.m. Monday night, KCSO said it received a call that someone had been rear-ended near SE 288th Street and 228th Avenue South. The caller told deputies a person from the car had gotten out and carjacked them with a gun.

The Black Diamond Police Department got into a pursuit with the suspect's vehicle, a silver Hyundai, which ended when the suspects crashed into a tree in Black Diamond.

"My kids were on their way home last night, about midnight, and they got rear-ended by a car that they didn't even know was in the area," said Telly Lambro.

Lambro says his sons, ages 16 and 15, along with one of their friends, were confronted by five people from the car that rear-ended their vehicle.

"The gentleman in the driver's seat and the lady in the passenger's seat had been yelling at them, and a kid got out of the backseat and pointed a gun at them and told them to get out of here," said Lambro. "At that point, both vehicles, the one that rear ended our vehicle as well as our vehicle, left. Apparently half of the group that was in the original car had crashed."

Black Diamond Police say three juvenile suspect were in the stolen silver Hyundai when it crashed into a tree.

"Unfortunately we learned today, early this morning, that the driver was deceased. He passed away from the injuries. We have a female passenger who is critically injured and a male passenger who is also injured as well," said Cmdr. Brian Martinez. "I can't imagine what these family members are going through right now learning that their loved ones are injured and one is deceased."

KCSO said the suspects are believed to be teens between the ages of 15 and 17, but no additional information was available on their identities.

224th Avenue SE and SE 297th Street were closed overnight while crews cleared the scene of the crash. The roadway reopened Tuesday morning.
