Brush fire in Fort Steilacoom Park threatened homes in Lakewood

The fire came close to trees and homes, prompting officials to evacuate some residents.

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Crews are continuing to put out hotspots after a three-alarm brush fire in the area of Fort Steilacoom Park near Waughop Lake. 

SkyKING video shows a charred burn scar in the impacted area of the park.

The fire threatened surrounding neighborhoods for a period of time Wednesday afternoon, according to the Lakewood Police Department. Residents within a five-mile area were told to evacuate by West Pierce Fire & Rescue. The evacuation is not mandatory, according to the City of Lakewood. 

About 40 homes were threatened by the fire.

For those in need of a cool place to go, Claudia Thomas Middle School is open for fire evacuees.

Tacoma Public Utilities de-energized some power lines to help with firefighting efforts. Approximately 3,000 customers were impacted. 

There are no known injuries.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The Department of Natural Resources has been called in to help.
