Power restored to San Juan Island residents following county-wide outage

The whole county lost power around 5 p.m. Power restoration began around 2 a.m. Friday after the issue at the mainland was resolved.

SAN JUAN COUNTY, Wash. — All 15,000 San Juan Islands residents have had their power restored following a county-wide outage, according to Orcas Power and Light Co-op (OPALCO).

The entire county lost power around 5 p.m. Thursday. According to OPALCO, the issue was on the mainland with Puget Sound Energy.

Mainland repairs were finished around 2 a.m. on Friday and power restoration began across the islands at that time.

Power was fully restored by 1 p.m. on Friday.

Customers who regain power, but lose it again are encouraged to report outages by calling 360-376-3599 or through their SmartHub account.

This outage occurred during a Winter Chill Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning, according to the National Weather Service.

OPALCO wrote to residents, "get out your candles and check on your neighbors."

OPALCO also suggested turning off most lights and heat so that when they do start restoring power, there won’t be such a big pull on the system.
