Construction along the stretch of I-5 near Tacoma will be completed this weekend, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
It marks the end of a 22-year project to add HOV lanes between state Route 16, state Route 167 and I-5.
"We are happy about it. It's a plus for us," said Tacoma resident Patrick Gigimu.
The project, called The Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program, cost 1.4 billion dollars and is made up of 14 smaller projects that first broke ground in 2001.
"It is monumental. It's a relief. We're very excited. This is something that we have been working towards, for a very long time," said WSDOT spokesperson Cara Mitchell. Read more
The parents of Sam Martinez, the Bellevue teen who died after a 2019 Washington State University (WSU) hazing incident, urge other families to learn from their story.
As thousands of young people in Washington prepare to head off to college, Martinez’s mother, Jolayne Houtz, said one of their greatest fears is hearing of another death to hazing.
“I will take that so personally if it happens. And I pray that it doesn’t. We just can’t afford to lose any of our young people and especially to something as bizarre and medieval as hazing,” Houtz said. “It’s really hard to talk about what happened to Sam but I couldn’t forgive myself if we didn’t try to share our story in a way that could reach someone.” Read more
A suspect in the August 2005 murder of Shanan Read was ordered to be held on $1 million bail by a Kitsap County Judge on Friday.
Brandon Reeve pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge related to Read's death.
A probable cause statement alleges Reeve and three other men killed Read, who was an "associate" of theirs in an "ongoing criminal enterprise to forge financial documents and commit acts of theft and fraud." Read more

The Washington State Department of Agriculture is urging the public to report sightings of oversized, striped-eyed grasshoppers that could be a pest to crops.
WSDA recently confirmed the first detection of the Egyptian grasshopper in Washington state. An Everett resident reported the grasshopper to state entomologists earlier this year. That grasshopper was living but sluggish, according to WSDA. Read more
