Cement truck crash causes gridlock on northbound I-5 in Seattle

A cement truck rolled over on northbound I-5 near SR 520 Friday morning, causing lengthy backups in the area. All lanes reopened to traffic just after 11 a.m.

SEATTLE — Multiple lanes of northbound Interstate 5 near State Route 520 in Seattle were closed for several hours Friday morning due to a crash involving a cement truck.

A Washington State Patrol (WSP) spokesperson tweeted the cement truck rolled over and spilled a portion of its load onto the interstate. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) first reported the crash around 8:20 a.m. The crash caused a traffic backup of at least six miles by 10:30 a.m.

WSDOT crews closed the two right northbound lanes around 9:45 a.m. before closing all northbound lanes just before 10 a.m. so crews could clean up the crash and remove the concrete truck. The on-ramp to northbound I-5 from SR 520 also closed around 10:10 a.m. due to a crash.

A tow truck was seen removing the cement truck from the interstate around 10:45 a.m., and all northbound lanes reopened to traffic by 11:10 a.m.

WSDOT crews opened the northbound I-5 express lanes early to help alleviate traffic.

While all northbound lanes are now open, drivers should expect some delays on northbound I-5 as the backup clears.

The WSP and the WSDOT Incident Response Team responded to the scene.
