Top 20 top selling vehicles in May: Cars still matter

Even though buyers crave SUVs and pickups at the moment, a look at the Top 20 best-selling vehicles in May shows that cars are still holding their own.

Toyota's Camry moved up a notch from April to reclaim its spot as the nation's third most popular vehicle -- and the most popular car -- for the month. After the Fiat Chrysler's Ram 1500, now in fourth place, comes four cars -- Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord.

One model, the Altima, climbed from 13th place in April to seventh place in May on the Top 20 list.

But even though sedans are hanging in there, the emphasis is still on trucks. Pickups or SUVs make up 11 of the 20 spots on this month's Top 20 list.

"We're still in a low gas-price environment that is driving the truck and utilities to have an ever-increasing market share," says Eric Lyman, senior analyst for TrueCar.com.

Most important, he says, compact SUVs are on track to outsell compact cars as a group for the first time ever this year. Compact cars are expected to make up 15.2% of all new vehicles sold this year while crossover SUVs will likely be 15.6%.

The trend, however, didn't help Honda's CR-V, which fell from sixth place in April to ninth place in May. Chevrolet Equinox, another popular SUV, fell as well, from seventh place to 11th.

There were other surprises, too. Jeep Wrangler, a relative newscomer to the Top 20 list, moved up from 19th place to 18th. But Jeep Cherokee, along with the Chrysler 200 sedan, fell off the list entirely.

They were replaced in the Top 20 by Chevrolet Malibu at 20th and Ford Focus at 15th. Focus and Malibu periodically work their way on to the list.
