20 years later: Remembering Latin pop star Selena

HOUSTON — Today marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Latin pop star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, and fans are flocking to Corpus Christi to celebrate her life.

Many are remembering the star at her grave site and memorial statue on North Shoreline Boulevard in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Selena was just 23 years old when Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club, shot and killed her at a Days Inn motel.

Saldivar was apparently Selena's agent as well as the manager of the singer's "Selena Etc." clothing boutiques.

Saldivar was embezzling money and was banned from the recording facility run by Selena's father, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The "Queen of Tejano" did not want to dissolve their friendship and agreed to meet with Saldivar at the Days Inn motel on the morning of March 31, 1995, to collect financial documents.

Saldivar delayed handing over the papers and told Selena she was raped the night before. Selena drove the woman she believed to be her friend to the hospital but doctors did not find any evidence of rape.

After the women returned to the motel, Saldivar shot Selena with a .38-caliber gun.

The singer was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead from blood loss and cardiac arrest.

Saldivar was convicted of the murder and is currently serving a life prison term.

Just months after Selena's death, her album Dreaming of You was released and sold more than 2 million copies.

Along with a statue of the beloved artist, a Selena museum was opened in Corpus Christi where fans continue to celebrate her life.

Her father has mixed feelings about the celebrations of her passing. Abraham Quintanilla III says his family remembers Selena daily, but doesn't mark the March 31 anniversary, the Associated Press reports.

Quintanilla told the AP that his family doesn't feel her death is something to celebrate.
