Seattle is getting two new dog parks at these locations

The city is planning to turn about 28,000 square feet of open space into two new dog parks.

SEATTLE — The city of Seattle is getting two new dog parks at West Seattle Stadium and Othello Park.

Seattle Parks and Recreation announced the selections Thursday. The Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners recommended the locations during its March 14 meeting after the city conducted an off-leash area expansion survey.

Seattle parks said the planning and construction timeline would be announced soon.

The current cycle of the Metropolitan Park District provides funding to construct two new off-leash areas and design a third. Seattle Parks said it would prioritize new dog parks at West Seattle Stadium and Othello Park in Rainier Valley.

The site studied at West Seattle Stadium is about 16,000 square feet. It sits to the west of the golf course and south of the stadium. The Othello Park site is about 12,000 square feet and is located in the southwest corner near South Webster Street and 43rd Avenue South.

The study found several other sites that would be suitable for a new dog park but more funding and community input are needed before the city begins planning or constructing those areas. Those sites include Ravenna Park near the tennis court and wading pool, Brighton Playfield at the existing sand volleyball court, and East Queen Anne Playfield at the existing basketball court and open lawn.

A planning timeline for the Ravenna Park location is expected to be announced soon, the city said.

The city also looked at sites at View Ridge Playfield, Powell Barnett Park, Discovery Park and Lincoln Park and decided they were not suitable based on community feedback.
