No fatalities after military helicopter training flight crashes on JBLM

Authorities have not confirmed how many people were on board or if there were any injuries.

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — There were no fatalities after a military helicopter training flight crashed on Joint Base Lewis-McChord Monday night, according to the base.

The accident happened at around 9:30 p.m. at Rainier Road Southeast and Stedman Road Southeast.

A 7th Infantry District public information officer confirmed that an "aviation mishap" occurred on the base involving a U.S. Army AH-64E Apache helicopter during a routine training exercise. The pilots were taken to Madigan Army Medical Center for evaluation, according to the spokesperson.

The two soldiers involved are considered "stable" at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Monique Anderson, who lives about a mile from the crash site, said she is used to helicopters flying overhead on training missions, but last night, she and her husband heard something different.

"We heard the rotors... they were off-kilter, kind of slower than normal," she said.

The site will likely be blocked for several more hours while the investigation continues.

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office, Olympia area firefighters and crews from Joint Base Lewis-McChord all responded to the incident.

A military team has been deployed from the Combat Readiness Center at Fort Novosel, Alabama, to investigate the crash.
