Western Carolina coach Mark Speir has something to tell Kirk Herbstreit.

During ESPN College GameDay on Saturday morning, the analysts were discussing the weak schedules many teams — such as Alabama, ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings — have this weekend. Host Chris Fowler said he meant no harm by calling these types of games “glorified scrimmages,” but that the SEC has no business playing FCS teams at this point in the season. Alabama beat Western Carolina 48-14, and there were similar outcomes favoring the SEC in games between South Carolina-South Alabama, Georgia-Charleston Southern and Florida-Eastern Kentucky.

Lee Corso said as a former coach, he loved these types of games because it gave his players a break and helped the smaller schools out financially. Herbstreit said it’s the “worst thing that goes on in college football” and that it’s “pathetic” when looking at the larger landscape of the playoff picture that these are the types of games being played this weekend.

Speir was watching the show and didn’t like what he heard. And following his team’s loss in Tuscaloosa, he let out his frustration to some reporters.

“A guy had a silver spoon in his mouth all his life, Ohio State, prima donna state quarterback talking about, ‘It’s an embarrassment,’” Speir said via AL.com. “He ain’t ever coached.”

Speir never referenced Herbstreit by name, but he is the only analyst on GameDay who played quarterback at Ohio State.

The Catamounts briefly held their own with the Tide, taking a 7-0 lead and trailing just 17-14 in the second quarter. Then Alabama ran away with the game.

Though schools like Alabama are criticized for playing FCS opponents in late November, the small schools benefit. Alabama paid Western Carolina $480,000 to play this game and according to AL.com, Speir said earlier this week on a Southern Conference coaches teleconference that this type of game essentially funds their athletic department.

“I’m just proud of FCS football. I’m proud of our football team. I hope America doesn’t listen to a guy who sits behind a mic that hasn’t ever done it with that silver spoon in his mouth,” Speir said. “He never had probably a bloody nose or a callus like some of these guys.”
