Duwamish River shoreline now open after sewage spill

A roughly 3,000-foot stretch of the Duwamish River opened Sunday after closing due to a sewage spill earlier in the week.

SEATTLE — A section of the Duwamish River reopened to water activities Sunday morning after closing Friday due to a sewage spill.

Seattle Public Utilities received reports of a sewage blockage around 1 p.m. on Thursday. The sewage was in a ditch near the King County International Airport at Boeing Field. The overflow then reached the Duwamish River.

The closure extended from the Turning Basin to Harbor Island.

Seattle and King County Public Health said tests results confirmed acceptable levels Sunday and reopened the roughly 3,000-foot area to fishing and water activities.

Due to legacy chemical pollution, the lower Duwamish River has had an on-going fishing advisory that recommends only fishing for salmon. Always avoid bottom-dwelling seafood species from the lower Duwamish.
