Contract strike closes Port Angeles schools for a second day

Port Angeles teachers voted not to cross the picket line while paraeducators go on strike demanding a new contract.

Schools in the Port Angeles School District are closed Friday for the second day in a row while paraeducators continue to strike over contract negotiations.

Paraeducators in the district voted to go on strike Wednesday evening after negotiations failed to produce an agreement on a new contract. Teachers in the district voted this week to not cross the picket line while paraeducators are on strike, the district said.

"We recognize that a strike is disruptive to our District's staff, students, school families and the community at large, and we apologize," the district said in a statement. "This has been an especially challenging year for negotiations across the state with the McCleary decision and figuring out how the new state funding formula works in each district. There is every confidence we will work through this issue."

All activities and athletics will go on as scheduled, the district said.

The district's main office will remain open. Check its website for the latest closure information.
