'I was prepared to run': Witness recorded stolen plane doing loops

John Waldron witnessed a plane doing loops over Chambers Bay and started taking video. It wasn't until Waldron got home that he realized what he had just witnessed.

On Friday night, John Waldron recorded less than two minutes of video, but he managed to capture some of the heart-pounding moments after an airline worker stole a Horizon plane from Sea-Tac Airport.

From his living room, Waldron recounted his Friday night walk at Chambers Bay Golf Course.

"I go down there twice a week. I always bring a camera because of the sunsets down there and the scenery is just gorgeous," he said.

On that night, when he looked to the skies he saw a low-flying plane doing flips, and he grabbed his cell phone.

"He had just started the loop," said Waldron. "He recovered from the loop that he went into, but it looked like he was going to head right toward where I was at so I was prepared to run."

Waldron says the pilot pulled the plane up into a steep climb, and headed toward Steilacoom. That's when he lost sight of it.

"Maybe 10 to 15 seconds later, I saw a quick small orange flash and a puff of smoke. Then I really knew something wasn't right, but I had no idea what I had just witnessed," said Waldron.

It wasn't until he was back home that Waldron saw the news about a stolen, empty Horizon plane with Richard Russell behind the controls.

"I just saw a plane crash and I have video. I need to get this posted. This could be an important thing for whoever investigates this to have," said Waldron.

Investigators say Russell did not survive the crash. Waldron hopes his video helps Russell's family.

"I would hope that it would help bring closure to the family because I think they would want to know what happened before their son lost his life," he said.
