Seattle — It's called The London Fog, an Earl Grey infused layered cake that is so popular it may have saved a Georgetown landmark.
“I don’t know if I would give it that much credit,” laughed Charlie Dunmire.
For more than a hundred years, the bright green corner shop on Carleton Avenue had been home to a neighborhood market.
It was a gathering place for members of the community that was on the verge of closing when Dunmire decided to open up shop there.
“There wasn’t a lot of thought behind it,” she admitted.
A few years ago Dunmire discovered she had a knack for baking cakes.
“I was like ‘Woah, this is my creative outlet. This is what I really want to do’.”
Dunmire started Deep Sea Sugar and Salt in an airstream in the Georgetown Trailer Park Mall.
She plans to reopen that location later in the summer.
Her focus has always been on taste.
“I think a lot of cakes are overly sweet,” she said. “ I think that they are overshadowed by the sugar and you don't get to really taste a lot of the flavors that are supposed to be presented with the cake.”
Critics have been raving ever since. And on opening day customers lined up at the new location.
“It was a blast! it was awesome! everybody has really shown up,” she said.
What a sweet way to give new life to an old Seattle landmark.
