Seattle International Film Festival features Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams movie 'Disobedience'

The movie is rated R and screens this weekend.
Director Sebastain Lelio talks to entertainment reporter Kim Holcomb about his new film Disobedience.

The Seattle International Film Festival opened tonight and will feature 433 films over the next three weeks – including Disobedience, starring Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz.

Director Sebastian Lelio, who received an Academy Award for 'Best Foreign Film' in 2018, hopes audiences are moved by his first movie in English.

It’s set in an Jewish-Orthodox neighborhood and focuses on two women who fell in love as teenagers and reunite years later.

"One of them, Rachel Weisz, escaped from this more or less oppressive culture or context. And by doing that, she gained her individual freedom but she lost her origins,” Lelio said. “And the Rachel McAdams character stayed and managed to live a good life, got married. But she lost contact with who she really is."

The movie is based on a best-selling novel and is being hailed by critics for its realism.

Lelio believes it has universal themes, despite the very specific setting.

"The eternal friction or tension between individual freedom and the interests of the community, between duty and desire, between flesh and spirit,” he said. "Cinema is a way to create a sort of bridge or channel through which you can visit unknown territories and learn and expand your understanding."

Disobedience is rated R and will screen at SIFF on Sunday and Monday. It opens in Seattle on May 25.

"I hope (audiences) walk out of the theater feeling they lived an experience,” Lelio said. "And hopefully understanding that sometimes, disobedience is a duty."
