Seattle Parks and Recreation has replaced the fire pits at Alki Beach in West Seattle, ahead of the busy summer season.

The seven new rings feature lockable lids. The city said this will help prevent unauthorized use when the park is closed at night, and when burn bans are in place.

“The previous pits were old, rusty and beginning to fall apart,” said Christina Hirsch with Parks and Recreation.

People that live nearby say the rings were already popular, and will likely see more use as the weather improves.

“I am excited, but a little nervous,” said Bethany Pupava. “I remember (in high school) we’d have to come out and reserve them early in the day, especially in the summer. But it’s good to hear they updated them.”

Hirsch said the new lids can help extinguish fires, but they still ask users to douse them with water before leaving.
