TACOMA, Wash. – The search for a missing billionaire in the Swiss Alps has a connection to Tacoma.

Karl-Erivan Haub, a member of one of the richest families in the world, disappeared while skiing in Switzerland near the Matterhorn.

Haub, 58, whose family is German, was born in Tacoma.

His parents visited Tacoma in the 1950’s and decided to have their children born in the United States.

The family donated millions to redevelopment efforts in downtown Tacoma. Their support helped establish UW Tacoma, the Museum of Glass, and the expansion of the Tacoma Art Museum.

“We’re really, really lucky the Haubs came to Tacoma,” said Tacoma Art Museum Executive Director David Setford.

The Haub Family Galleries at the museum house more than 200 pieces of art from the family’s personal collection. Approximately $20 million in donations paid for the additional wing for the museum.

Haub’s father, Erivan Haub, passed away in March.

Setford said Erivan Haub’s widow and daughter-in-law were in the museum over the weekend when they learned Karl-Erivan Haub was reported missing.

"Our thoughts are with them," said Setford.

Former Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland said she was hoping for good news.

“The Haub family has strong ties to Tacoma,” said Strickland in a written statement. “The family has been very generous to the community.”
