A 28-year-old suspect is dead, shot by a Pierce County Sheriff's deputy when he entered the deputy's patrol car with a knife near Graham.

The incident happened about 9:30 Friday night when a woman call 911 to report her male friend was having a "mental breakdown." While on the call she told the dispatcher he had a knife, then started screaming. The dispatcher heard her say, "Let go of me now!" and "Stop it!"

The suspect then ran away and tried to break into another car. Shortly after, the first deputy arrived.

The deputy says the suspect refused to obey several commands to surrender at gunpoint, then entered the patrol car and the deputy fired.

The suspect is a 28-year-old male from Spanaway. The deputy was not injured.
