Legendary Seattle photographer's stunning and flawed legacy

Beyond the Frame revisits the photographs of Edward S. Curtis and sparks conversations on Native identity, race, and resilience, art and culture.

A stunning new initiative celebrates the work of Seattle photographer Edward S. Curtis, who spent decades documenting the lives of Native Americans in photos, audio recordings, and a full-length film. Beyond the Frame - To Be Native is the result of a partnership between nearly two dozen businesses, organizations, and tribal nations.

Jodee Fenton from the Seattle Public Library and Jeff Smith from the Native Program Committee (and a member of the Makah Tribe) shared more about this incredible undertaking.
