Photographer finds the bright side to Arlington's bitter cold

For many, the cold weather and snowy conditions have been an annoying obstacle. But one woman sees it as an opportunity.

Another cold night in Arlington means more ice, and more rigs ready to work on Snohomish County roads.

Local churches have opened up overnight shelters in the area, so people have a warm place to sleep.

Angela Kelly lives in Arlington and saw the weather's impact over the weekend.

"We woke up yesterday morning to no power and six inches of snow," said Kelly.

By Monday afternoon, Kelly was willing to share her bright side to the bitter cold, her special bubbles. She says you need two parts water, one part corn syrup, and one part dish soap. She mixes it together, then starts blowing bubbles in her front yard. When it is 20 degrees or below, the bubbles tend to freeze after landing. That is when Kelly, a photographer, starts taking pictures.

"It is one of those 'awe moments' when you see something you envisioned and wanted to capture, and you finally can," said Kelly.

She first got the idea four years ago. She decided to blow bubbles in below freezing temperatures as a way to entertain her 7-year-old son. She quickly realized she was on to something after her Facebook post earned lots of fans.

"Before I knew it, I was being contacted internationally," said Kelly.

She has received requests from people in several countries to use her photos.

Monday, conditions were cold and crisp enough to get her camera out before the sun came up.

"I tend to gravitate toward this type of weather," said Kelly.
