The US women's Olympic hockey team is making a very strong showing in Pyeongchang, They advanced to the gold medal game against Canada, after shutting out the team from Finland 5-0 over the weekend. The gold medal game takes place Wednesday, February 21 at 8:10 pm PT, and will air live on NBCSN.
Team USA's men's hockey team is off to a shaky start in Olympic action, finding themselves in a hole and having to fight their way into the medal rounds. And for the first time since 2002, there are no current NHL players on any of the countries' teams.
Kelly Stephens-Tysland, a hockey player from Shoreline who helped Team USA win the bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, joined us to help break down the action in women's and men's hockey in Pyeongchang. She also spotlighted a couple of unusual-sounding hockey calls and penalties.
Kelly began playing hockey at age seven and played her youth hockey with Seattle Junior Hockey Association. She was the captain of the women's hockey team at the University of Minnesota, helping lead the Golden Gophers to back-to-back NCAA championships.
She's the co-founder of the fitness facility Experience Momentum in Lynnwood.
Kelly is supporting the 2018 Hockey Challenge, benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and Alaska. The all-day event takes place Saturday, February 24th, at accesso ShoWare Center in Kent. Local charity teams will play each other all day, then the Seattle Thunderbirds face off with the Everett Silvertips at six, followed by an all-star game.
