Oregon police use armored vehicle to end dangerous chase

An AR-style rifle was found in the suspect's pickup truck in Sherwood, southwest of Portland. The suspect was shot and killed.

SHERWOOD, Ore. -- An armed suspect was shot and killed during a "tactical situation" in Sherwood on Friday afternoon.

Just after 1:30 p.m., Sherwood police received a report about a suspicious vehicle driving through an open field near Southwest Scholls-Sherwood Road and Roy Rogers Road. The suspect fled from the responding officer and fired a gun, according to Deputy Jeff Talbot with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Talbot on Friday said it's not clear whether the gunfire was targeted at the responding officer or fired into the air.

After the gunfire, the Washington County Sheriff's Office tactical team was called for assistance.

Talbot said nearby Laurel Ridge Middle School was temporarily in lockout as a precaution. The Sherwood School District said the school was never in lockout.

Roy Rogers Road was closed from Elsner Road to Cedarview Way.

Just after 3:30 p.m., a WCSO armored vehicle engaged the pickup truck and a chase ensued in the open field. The two vehicles collided several times before someone inside the armored vehicle fired numerous shots, hitting the suspect.
